Make This Super Bowl Really Super with These Great Finger Foods by Wen Zientek-Sico
Simple tips and tricks for a fantastic super bowl party, complete with dozens of recipes perfect for parties large and small.
It is time for that dreaded annual fiasco, the Super Bowl Party. I have been to quite a few Super Bowl parties in my time and have thrown a couple myself. Hosts and hostesses usually have a terrible time planning and throwing a Super Bowl party. To someone who has never had to throw a successful Super Bowl party - or who has never been to a bad one - it may be hard to figure out just why it is so hard to plan a Super Bowl party. The problem can be summed up in one word: food.
In previous years it was acceptable to shove all of the men into a smoky living room and just shove beer and potato chips through the door when they started getting rowdy. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending upon how you look at it, that is no longer acceptable. Not only have our eating habits changed, but so have the faces of the guests at Super Bowl parties. No longer does the testosterone flow almost as fast as the beer. Football fans of both sexes and all ages are attending football parties. While I am sure that there are plenty of rooms filled with guys watching the game, it is more and more common for Super Bowl Sunday to be a family day where the whole family gets together with friends or relatives. It is somewhat difficult to feed Aunt Agnes a bowl of nachos and salsa with a cold beer alongside.
Obviously standard Super Bowl party fare has had to change quite a bit. It is not the best occasion for a sit down dinner unless you have the ability to seat most of the guests where they can see the television. Because the game and pre-show hubbaloo falls in the dinner hour it is necessary to food with substance or else arrange special meal times. You need food that does not interfere with television viewing, that is filling, that is portable, and that satisfies people of all ages. The typical response to this problem is to order pizza or other fast food with millions of other people on this busy day. There is a better and healthier way to deal with this dilemma: finger foods.
Before your football fans start griping about watercress sandwiches and escargot, let me assure you that finger foods can be hearty fare that will appeal to even the most dyed in the wool football fans. Items like Pigs in Blankets, Red Hot Chicken Wings, Onion Blossoms, and Cheese in Round Rye Bread are not what you would serve the Ladies' Garden Guild, but they make perfect fare for football fans.
